“The Winding Journey of Bill Genaust’s Flag Raising Footage”
  • Date: Thursday, June 01, 2017
  • Time: 6:00 pm
  • Location: William G. McGowan Theater, Washington, DC

The National Archives retains and preserves authentic records of the Federal Government; Bill Genaust’s footage of the first and second Flag Raisings on Iwo Jima, is one such record.  When the National Archives investigated the true identity of the flag raisers in Genaust’s footage and the iconic photograph by Joe Rosenthal, staffers discovered that the agency never received the original film shot on February 23, 1945.  Supervisory Motion Picture Preservation Specialist Criss Kovac provides information about Bill Genaust and how the film was shot, developed, assembled, and used during the World War II and throughout history.  Presentation materials are available at www.archives.gov/calendar/know-your-records.

All public programs at the National Archives are free. Reservations are recommended; seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. The doors to the building will open 45 minutes prior to the start of the program. Use the Special Events entrance on the corner of Constitution Avenue and 7th Street, NW. Live captioning will be available online and in the William G. McGowan Theater. If you require an alternative or additional accommodation for an event (such as a downloadable transcript or a sign language interpreter), please send an email to public.program@nara.gov or call 202.357.5000 in advance.
