Women’s Suffrage and the Vote: Funding Feminism
  • Date: Thursday, March 15, 2018 - Friday, March 16, 2018
  • Time: 11:00 pm
  • Location: William G. McGowan Theater, Washington, DC

In celebration of Women’s History Month and leading up to the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 2020, we are presenting programs honoring women’s suffrage history. Today’s panel discussion examines the role and sources of money in the suffrage fight—both in support of and in opposition to the suffrage amendment—as well as the role of money for elected women in contemporary political life. Distinguished panelists include Page Harrington, former Executive Director, National Woman’s Party and Belmont-Paul National Monument; Joan Johnson, author of Funding Feminism: Monied Women, Philanthropy and the Women’s Movement, 1870–1967; A’Lelia Bundles, author & journalist; and Sarah Bryner, Research Director, Center for Responsive Politics.

A book signing will follow the program. Purchase this book on the day of the event from the National Archives Store and receive a 15% discount (members get 20% off).

Presented in partnership with the National Woman’s Party and the 2020 Women’s Vote Centennial Initiative (WVCI).

All public programs at the National Archives are free and streamed live online via the National Archives’ YouTube channel. Reservations are recommended; seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. The doors to the building will open 45 minutes prior to the start of the program. Use the Special Events entrance on the corner of Constitution Avenue and 7th Street, NW. Click here for more information on getting to the National Archives and parking.
