Congressional Review: Can Congress Function at its Highest Level?
  • Date: Thursday, June 01, 2017 - Friday, June 02, 2017
  • Time: 11:00 pm
  • Location: William G. McGowan Theater, Washington, DC

In the past, leaders from the House and Senate have come together to study the health of the institution, make recommendations, and subsequently update internal organization and procedures to fit with the times. The Legislative Reorganization Acts of 1946 and 1970 both strengthened Congress considerably. Moderated by A.B. Stoddard, associate editor and columnist RealClear Politics, a distinguished panel will discuss if Congress is due for an internal review, and willing to look inward.  The panel includes Former Members of Congress Bob Walker (R-PA), Steve Horsford (D-NV), Current House Chief of Staff to Rep. Lipinski (D-IL) – Eric Lausten, and Former Senate Chief of Staff to Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL) – Kate Dickens.

Presented by the National Archives in partnership with the U.S. Association of Former Members of Congress, the Aspen Institute, the Legislative Branch Capacity Working Group, the Democracy Fund, the Congressional Institute, and the Hewlett Foundation’s Madison Initiative.

All public programs at the National Archives are free and streamed live online via the National Archives’ YouTube channel. Reservations are recommended; seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. The doors to the building will open 45 minutes prior to the start of the program. Use the Special Events entrance on the corner of Constitution Avenue and 7th Street, NW. Click here for more information on getting to the National Archives and parking.
