Years of July 4 Support: 10 |
Since John Hancock has been an Archives supporter:
– 3 Archivists of the United States |
A perennial favorite in Washington, DC, the July 4 celebration at the National Archives attracts visitors from across the country who come to see the original Declaration of Independence and celebrate the birth of our nation. For the past 10 years, the Foundation has been privileged to partner with John Hancock to support this Independence Day tradition.
Each year, thanks in part to John Hancock’s dedicated support, the Archivist of the United States welcomes thousands of patriotic Americans who have gathered on the steps of the National Archives Building for a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence and a rousing rendition of the national anthem.
In 2014, after a decade of support, John Hancock has expanded their commitment to include education and family programs at the National Archives throughout the year. To honor this partnership, the Foundation’s Executive Director, Patrick Madden, presented Linda Watters, Vice President of Government Relations at John Hancock, with a facsimile of a powerful record signed by John Hancock and the Continental Congress: the 1775 “Agreement of Secrecy,” in which the delegates promised “not to divulge” their activities, which were considered traitorous by King George III.
